Business at its best

The mall is a good thing.

Victor caters to all of the surrounding areas as an upscale center of commerce. As the home of Eastview Mall, many families are drawn to the area for its excellent tax rates and shopping convenience.

Local families appreciate the break in taxes provided by the mall. Historically, it has kept taxes in Victor some of the lowest in the county. However, all of Ontario County benefits from the income brought in by the mall. As online sales have increased over the past few years, the amount of sales tax that offsets costs for local residents has decreased. Even at the current rate of $1.65 per thousand, they are still well under the median town tax rate for Ontario County.

In addition to keeping taxes low, the mall has drawn many businesses to the area. As a result, residents have a variety of options for everything from home décor to grocery stores. Main Street hosts traditional small businesses and local shops. Meanwhile, the area surrounding Eastview caters to shoppers looking for big-box stores. Despite all of the local businesses, Victor is mostly made up of beautiful farmland and neighborhoods and is a peaceful place to raise a family.

A vibrant past

History thrives here.

While the entire Finger Lakes region has a rich history, Victor is home to a Seneca village known as Gannagaro, or Ganondagan. The history of the village and Seneca people is celebrated at Ganondagan.

Thousands of Seneca people lived in the village until 300 years ago. In the 1700s, French invaders from Canada attacked the village to gain control of the fur trade. It wasn’t until the 1960s that work began to make the site a historic landmark. Preservation has turned to a desire to educate the public about the Senecas. Today, there is a life-size replica of a longhouse, an art and culture center, a gift shop, and hiking trails at the site. School groups schedule guided tours all year long. There are also a number of events hosted at Ganondagan, such as the Native American Winter Arts Festival and Native American Winter Games and Sports, which draw great crowds.

Ganondagan isn’t the only local historic site. History buffs will love visiting Boughton Hill and Valentown Hall. Town Historian Babette Huber put together a pamphlet for anyone looking to do a driving tour of the town. In a town that has done such an amazing job of preserving local history, it’s a great destination to visit and an even better place to call home.
