Not sure how to clean your home in a way that is not stressful or severly time consuming? Stressed about keeping your house looking and smelling clean while it’s on the market?

Consider this: A professional house cleaner can clean your home before you’re finished scrubbing down the kitchen from top to bottom.

The secret to being as speedy and thorough as the pros? You’ve just been doing it wrong. (And so have we!)

Test out these tips to see how much more efficient and effective your cleaning game can become. With a little practice, you could be cleaning your entire house better than ever in just 2-3 hours, a skill we’re sure you’ll want to retain for your next home as well!

1. Prep.

Streamline cleaning solutions and supplies. Prevent a lengthy “pick up” session by adopting a “Just Do It” attitude when it comes to putting things away. Have a weekly chore routine that maintains your home between more intense cleaning sessions.

2. Adopt an efficient cleaning method.

Clean your home from top to bottom, left to right. You’ll move dirt from the highest to lowest point, preventing any need for re-cleaning an area.

Instead of cleaning one room at a time, move throughout your house with one type of task at a time. Pros suggest the following strategy:

  1. Dust everything. Dry dust when you can but use a damp microfiber cloth if you need to remove fingerprints.
  2. Clean fabrics. Strip beds or make them. Use a vacuum attachment to clean couches other upholstery, tidying pillows and throw blankets as you go.
  3. Wash mirrors and windows throughout the house.
  4. Wipe surfaces and counters that get dirty, disinfecting as needed. Don’t skip door handles, remotes, light switches, or phones!
  5. Spray everything that needs to be cleaned, letting it sit before scrubbing the bathroom and kitchen.
  6. Sweep, then mop any floors that need it.
  7. Vacuum the whole house. Save your back and time by moving furniture just a few inches to either side so you can vacuum under things without rearranging the entire room.

3. Delegate the cleaning duties.

One other thing we’d like to mention—cleaning is rarely anyone’s idea of a great way to spend an afternoon, so delegate, delegate, delegate! If anyone else in your home can wield a broom, take out trash, or fold laundry, work together to clean your home. That way, you end up with more time to do the things you love together in your squeaky clean home.
