Moving into a new home is an exciting adventure! Now that closing is officially complete, you may be daydreaming of dazzling decor, eye-popping paint schemes, and stylish new furniture. But before you get into the fun stuff, there are some basic move-in tasks you may want to consider first:

Door Lock

Change the Locks

Even if new locks were promised when purchasing your home, you can never be too careful when it comes to security. It may be worth the money to gain the peace of mind that comes with knowing no one else has the keys to your home. Changing the locks can easily be a DIY project, or you can call in a locksmith for less hassle and a little extra money.

Carpet Cleaner

Steam Clean the Carpets

It’s always a great idea to get a fresh start with your floors before beginning the decorating process. The previous owners may have had pets, young children, or even years of crumbs and clumsiness. Take the time to steam clean the carpets so your floors are fresh and free of any stains or allergens. Ready for another DIY? It’s easy and affordable to rent a steam cleaner — or contact a local professional.

Mouse on floor

Call an Exterminator

Prior to moving in, it’s likely you haven’t spent enough time inside to get an accurate view of any pests that may be lurking about. Call an exterminator to assess your new home. They will take care of any mice, insects, and other critters that could be hiding inside walls or under floorboards.

Mop on hardwood floor

Deep Clean the Kitchen

If the previous occupants wanted to skip some sanitation duties when moving out, the kitchen is a very easy place to cut cleaning corners. Wipe down the inside of any drawers or cabinets, and disinfect both the refrigerator & the oven. Thoroughly scrub all the nooks and crannies underneath each appliance. It can be shocking to see the dirt and grime that can build up when not properly taken care of.
